Ezra Brooks: $11.99, 90 Proof, BSBB Rating: 3.5 Stars

To kick off the blog I grabbed one of the cheapest bourbons at my closest liquor store; it was a fifth of Ezra Brooks for $11.99. I had to squat down to find this guy on the bottom shelf, but I was immediately impressed by the glass bottle and I was eager to taste it.

Ezra Brooks: A Delicious First Whisk

It’s very sweet smelling, almost like bananas.
My first sip started with a bite but the drink immediately rushed in with some really decent bourbon flavor. Other bourbon fans might have their own favorite qualities, but when I’m trying a new drink I only need to smell something sweet, feel it bite me a little, and then quickly feel the whiskey rush over my tongue with a great aftertaste- completely removing any negative reaction I might have felt. I didn't expect much from this bottle (given that it was nearly the cheapest one I could find) but I actually really liked it.

PROS

  • It’s not too dry, giving it a decent drinkability. With some other whiskeys I find I desperately need  a glass of water on the side if I’m gonna get through them, because every sip seems to suck all the moisture out of my mouth.
  • This bourbon honestly tastes pretty good.

CONS

  • The wetness of this Ezra Brooks is partially a good thing, but I admit it’s kind of a downside too- I can’t help but feel like this drink is just a watery version of a better bourbon. If you don’t let it rest on your tongue a little before swallowing you'll probably miss a lot of the flavor.

AND?
As an added bonus, this whiskey goes down so wet and smooth it's easy to lose count. I drank this bad boy Sunday night and completely forgot what I saw during Game of Thrones, so I got to watch it again the next day. That's right bourbon fans, this drink can double (and potentially even triple) the number of episodes you see!
